I think I'm doing this aging thing wrong. I keep adding more responsibilities, which is leaving far too little time for me to drink! It may be because I'm "off schedule" in terms of the normative female life course. I came to parenting later in the game than is typical, which is why at 61 I'm still over a year away from coming home to an empty nest. Not sure how I'll handle that life transition, but I'm guessing cocktails will be involved : )
I've actually noticed that my opinions carry more weight than at any other time in my life, and people are much more forward about asking for them. But yeah goddamn: the money-spending thing is off the charts! I'm naturally a saver, though, so it balances out. Right now I'm enjoying a re-read of all the Dorothy parker short stories that I used to love.
That’s reassuring. I’ve definitely noticed that once I got to 60, people stopped caring what I thought except in a cute old lady kind of way. I want to be a wise old crone like my friend Anne, who is not at all crone-like.
I know so many women who feel this way, and it's also a big issue for a lot of my clients. I'm going to give a "Power Voice for Midlife Women (age 40+)" Zoom training in September, which you might enjoy. I'll send some deets as soon as they're ready.
Thank you! It’s good that more women are becoming empowered. In my experience there’s a big difference in how we are treated in our 40s and early 50s vs. later.
I've noticed the same on my opinions carrying weight. But people also didn't pay much attention to my ideas when I was younger -- small stature and youthful looks don't help you when you're young.
Oh, I don't know about people not caring what we think... My kids (and many friends) still ask me for my opinion/advice. Since my divorce, I've become a "divorce whisperer" to a couple of my friends going through a divorce themselves. I consider myself a crone, with wisdom to impart (but only when asked). After all, we learn from our mistakes. And lord knows, I've made more than my fair share of mistakes. Hence my incredible genius. There's a saying in Spanish "El Diablo sabe mas por ser viejo que por ser Diablo." Meaning: The Devil knows more because he's old than because he's the devil. Amen.
finding your chill is never a hot take, but it's always a chill one
Good point. Though I guess mixing metaphors is kind of a chill move.

I think having kids around keeps you young for sure. Empty nest can be really nice, as long as they visit from time to time.
I don't drink, but if ever anything was to tempt me...that watermelon drink sounds amazing!
You can make it virgin! Just omit the mezcal. It’s so refreshing,

The best sayings are Spanish ones! I want you to start a Divorce Whisperer stack!
