Much love and support on your journey, Alison. Your Womancake essay was a big hit with our readers, and I'm sure your singular voice will come through as you go through this experience (the text thread sums it up, I think!). Keep us posted, and know that we are listening with love.

So tonight, your “one fall away from disaster” father-in-law wobbled(bobbled?) his attempt to sit on his walker and slid onto the floor. He rested there for a short time before lumbering back onto the sofa, from where he rested again before giving it another, this time successful, go. Tonight I’ll read to him from Drew Gilpin Faust’s Necessary Trouble, more talk in’ bout my generation than his, but he’s giving it a go. So it goes on, slowly like that St. Petersburg tortoise, and we all try to remain upbeat if not standing up, and we eventually make it across the road. Which we’re sure you’ll do, too.

They have pears in Portugal, I hear. Take Julia with you. All will turn out well, as it should.

We’ve become so used to them that we’re surprised if a day goes by without one. This was really a slider.

I so appreciate your intrepid moving forward, Alison! Plus, 3am clafoutis sound just right for healing on the way to healing. Love (and yes, maybe a book out of it)!!

Dammit. Sending you so much care and healing and also kick-in-the-assness (others' asses, not yours) if that's something you can use.

Jeez... I've been wanting to write since I got your update. I'm without words. Every time I try to put something down, it all sounds trite. I'm just going to send you lots of love. In the nearly 26 years I've known you, I do know that you have community like almost no one I know. I know that your circle will surround you as much as you want. I'm home on 10/26 and would love coffee, lunch, tea, a walk, or anything that feels right to you.

Life is, well, life. I'm so glad you have such a wonderful support network in yours. Sending positive vibes from the east coast (just in case that sort of thing helps). I look forward to visiting you in Portugal, old friend.

Over the summer I had many long conversations about duel reality and split screens in our heads about two or more things going on that are both true. Life is so interesting. Hard, great, weird and multi layered. This too will pass and I look forward to watching you cook your way through it, described in detail whatever hour of the day you cook and eat. We can do hard things. Keep the Portugal dreams alive.

We actually are associated with a Portuguese Pickleball club. That’s how we chose the place we are planning to live. It’s a great group of people.
