Have you watched that Marie Kondo program about clearing stuff out? Who knew watching people sort through their stuff could make for such captivating television!
Thanks for subscribing to my Stack by the way. I wasn’t overtly fishing for that (though the Powers That Be say that’s a benefit of commenting on Notes). Glad to be connected.
I gave away some things during the pandemic. My neighborhood Buy Nothing page helped me a lot. People would be particularly excited about a certain item. It was a nicer process to give it to them rather than just donate. I am reading David Copperfield as a follow up to Demon Copperhead. Since it was originally serialized, it made sense to go ahead and read another book ‘in between’ and I am back to DC now.
Yes, I also got into donating on Buy Nothing during the pandemic and beyond. I recently gave away a pretty pink dress I wore to M’s high school graduation. The woman who got it was thrilled. The personal mementos are what I’m struggling with.
You’ve taken on a noble task in trying to declutter. Good luck. A burst pipe or something similar really helps by taking the discretion out of your hands
I relate to this on so many levels. I need to sort through my “stuff” too in preparation for my eventual move/downsizing. Sooo many memories. Love that you put this into words.
So much I relate to. Have recently made a big move and overwhelmed by the decisions about stuff to keep. A plethora of cookbooks despite severe pruning - will also write about this soon and you’ve given me another perspective. Big blue Le Creuset cast iron pot - keep. Add a good knife and a cutting board and that’s your decluttered kitchen tools for life. I would never part with mine.

I never watched it though years ago briefly attempted to figure what “sparks joy” among my possessions. It was an abysmal failure.
😂😂😂

No not at all, I was already reading it when I got your comment notification!

Absolutely. Like my Barbie dolls with clothes sewn by my grandmother

Yikes! Hadn’t thought of that.
Another fabulous blog post, Alison!! I so enjoy reading what you write! Your honesty, your humor, your insights. Wonderful!
The grapefruit and gin concoction you and I shared today may have helped. So great to see you!
